CEUs are a measurement of continuing education units that meet specific standards adopted, published and maintained by an organization recognized as accredited to provide continuing education, for the purpose of this rule, in the domain, theory or practice of occupational therapy.

PDUs are a measurement of professional development that may include CEUs or self-directed independent study, including, among other things, research, presentation or participation in activities that help advance your career as an occupational therapy practitioner.

CEUs and PDUs are non-degree seeking activities. Universities offering continuing education provide PDUs unless they are approved by a certifying entity to offer CEUs in the field of study. Some employers, such as schools and school districts in Idaho, require PDUs specific to university continuing education for classified employees.

The purpose of using the CEU model for continuing education in occupational therapy is to provide a standard for education that is transferable across state lines and practice settings. By completing CEUs and PDUs, adult learners gain and share current knowledge, expertise, and methods of contemporary practice.
